RETURN WIN FOR SHAUN (Sat 19th May 2018)
Having been out of the game for almost 15 years Shaun McGarrigle (12) made a speedy return to the winners rostrum on Saturday in the McHughs Oil open Stableford returning a best of the day 40pts thanks to a very strong inward nine where he chalked up seven pars and 22pts, to get the verdict in front of no fewer than five golfers who had all recorded 39pts earlier in the day in what must be said were tough conditions with the strong Southerly breeze prevailing throughout. The runner up in the aforementioned congested leader-board was James McGhee(15) a young player who has featured regularly in recent weeks and definitely one to watch as his improvement continues, in third position came Gerard Walsh (16) with Enda McDonnell (23) in fourth place and Stephen Alexander(18) fifth all with the same total of 39pts. Saturday’s gross prize went to Ryan McGowan (5)with 32 gross points, the front nine went to Anthony Brennan(18) with 21 pts to the turn with Brian Forrester (16) taking the back nine with 22pts. Congratulations to David Mullen who recorded his first hole in one on Saturday when he holed his tee-shot at the par three- 2nd hole. The winners of last weeks mixed foursomes played over 13 holes were Bernie O’Kane & Liam McGinley with 25pts, the runners up were Debbie McDaid & Stephen Kennedy also with 25 pts.

No joy for our mixed Foursomes team however at Killymoon G.C. on Sunday in the regional qualifying tournament where they failed to qualify for the matchplay stages, although missing out very narrowly in the end up it’s fair to say it was an uncharacteristic poor outing for a very strong side.

Better news for Pat Corry’s J. B.Carr team who are through to the next stage after a narrow win over Castlehume G.C on Wednesday last ,leading 4-1 from the home-leg Strabane got through by the narrowest of margins securing the second match they needed at the first tie hole when the team captain and George McCay won their match, after Francie Devine and Brian Forrester had won their tie at the 18th hole.

Frankie Connolly’s Conway Cup team picked up an 11-5 advantage over Enniskillen G.C. in their match at home last Sunday and will have work to do to progress after the away leg on Sunday week.

There was a close contest for second place with the next four on the leader-board returning 38pts, the best of these on break of tie was Bernard Vaughan (22) who chalked up 21pts on his back nine holes despite recording one of three sevens at the penultimate 17th hole!, third place went to Lewis Jones (12) who has been showing great improvement lately and one who will no doubt figure again soon, fourth place was taken by Eamon McCay (20) with the final Nett prize going to Foncie McNally (17). Declan Devine Monday Open (30th April 2018)
There was a good turnout on Monday for the latest Declan Devine sponsored Monday open series with golfers endeavouring to qualify for the final day in August. Well done to Mary Duffy and her ladies team who got the better of Green Isle Ladies on Friday past by 7 matches to 3 overall to advance to the next stage in that one.
Well done to Mark Gillespie & Nicky Wolfe as their team defied the odds to qualify for the next round of the Ulster Cup, a brilliant performance at Bangor Golf club on Monday where they took three of the seven matches saw them advance by a margin of four holes up after the tie had finished level at 7-7. Unfortunately John McMenamin’s All Ireland Four-ball team could not quite manage to repair the damage in their tie with Kilrea G.C. A poor away result had left them with a mountain to climb and although they certainly got close to the summit Kilrea dug in deep to take one of the early matches, best wishes to the Co.Derry team who could well go far in the competition this year.
